Idoani Community Protests Alleged Police Extortion and Harassment

Residents and youths in Idoani, a growing community in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, staged a peaceful protest over allegations of police extortion, intimidation, and harassment by officers attached to the local division. According to community members, frequent stop-and-search operations and alleged unlawful demands for money had created tension and frustration among residents, particularly commercial motorcyclists and young traders.

The protesters gathered at major junctions within the town carrying placards demanding fairness, accountability, and improved policing standards. Community leaders appealed for calm while urging authorities to investigate the allegations and restore trust between security agencies and the people.

Speaking during the demonstration, several youths expressed concern that negative treatment from security operatives discourages economic activity and affects the image of the community. They called on the Ondo State Government and police authorities to strengthen community policing initiatives and improve engagement with local residents.

Observers noted that the protest remained peaceful throughout, with traditional leaders and elders helping to maintain order while discussions continued between representatives of the protesters and security officials. Many residents hope the situation will lead to reforms that improve both security and community relations in Idoani.

The development has sparked wider conversations across Ondo State about the importance of balancing effective security operations with respect for citizens’ rights and dignity.
